PAYMENTS FOR COLLEGES SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS

In November 2011 we hosted a series of free 'Payments for Colleges Special Interest Groups', that were attended by 59 delegates from 46 colleges who came together to discuss the issues surrounding taking payments for colleges.

The special interest groups aimed to cover common queries and questions colleges have around taking payments in order to empower colleges and to provide opportunities to discuss future developments with various 3rd parties within the payment industry.

We are pleased to announce the attendees found these sessions very useful with interesting discussions surrounding the possibilities of taking payments online and the impact this has/could have on their college now.

Following a request to make the presentations available to all colleges following the events please find below the key elements discussed in each session and a link to download the presentation.

The Anatomy of a Transaction

Hosted by Lloyds TSB and HSBC Merchant Services LLP

This session provided delegates with an overview of the key terminology surrounding taking payments online and a breakdown of the important elements in the payment process.

Key discussions:

  • What is the cheapest method of payment?
  • Are the additional cost implications for overseas payments?
  • What is an Acquirer/PSP? How does a college work with these?

If you were not present at the meetings but want to find out more about this please contact us and we can put you in touch with other colleges to discuss who they choose to work with and why.

How Secure are your Payment Processes?

Hosted by American Express and Vendorcom

This session focused on PCI DSS compliance for a college. It explained what it is, its practical application and the consequences for non compliance. The session also explored options for reducing/removing the risk from the college when taking payments online and how/where the college is in or out of scope.

Key discussions:

  • Due to a lack of communication from the banks and acquirers many colleges were confused as to the definition of a college as a merchant even if they are not directly selling something.
  • It was noted that by taking card payments into the college in any form qualifies the college as a merchant and therefore the college needs to be PCI DSS compliant or use a 3rd party to remove the PCI DSS risk from the college.

The Future of a Cashless Campus

Hosted by VMC / MCR Systems

This session outlined what cashless campus means, what options are available for you to use in your college now and new developments for the cashless campus of the future. It covered why a college should be looking at cashless campus technology for aspects such as a cashless cafeteria, printing and library fines.

Key discussions:

  • The key focus of discussion was around when a college should push for a cashless campus. Is it worth starting now or waiting for a single solution?
  • Consensus was that colleges are starting to introduce cashless elements now, focusing on specific elements aligned to business processes.
  • Another key discussion was the security issues surrounding lost or stolen cards. It was noted that with the right structure in place colleges can help to balance the risk with the benefits of cashless cards.
